FICTION FRIDAY: Holiday Good

“Ah, Heinrich!  I’m glad you’ve arrived.”

“It sounded urgent, Vincent.  You have located your creature?”

“The reports must be about him: eight feet tall, wearing a lab coat too small for him, and still dragging one of the electrodes that was attached when he broke out of my lab.”

“So we have a chance of ending his reign of terror.”

“Yes.  And it must be today.”

     “So.  We have until midnight.”

     “Well, at least until five.”

“I thought you were too much of a scientist to put faith in the alignments of the stars.”

It’s not the stars…well, it’s kind of the calendar.  This is, after all, Labor Day.”

“Tell me about it.  What I had to pay for a ticket here on a Holiday weekend….”

“I assembled him from bits and pieces in the cemetery of company town.  But I had to time which parts of him I borrowed with when I could fit them in AND when suitable people died to provide fresh….”

“Yes, yes.  But what does that have to do with our timing?”

“Well, both his arms and one leg came from working stiffs, so they won’t be working today.”

“I see.  So we can take him while he’s on holiday.  What about his eyes and ears?”

“I believe those belonged to someone from Security, so they’ll be open.”

     “He’ll see us coming.”

“Yes, but he won’t know what to do.”

“Ah.  His brain is from a laborer as well?”

“No, it was actually from the old CEO’s son, the one he left the company to.  That brain never worked at all.”

“I wondered why he broke into the Reptile House at the zoo.”

“Yep.  Wanted new Crocs.  Let’s go.”
